Winter Solstice preparation

– The light season is now far behind us, and the dark season has firmly taken hold. Yet, we are already preparing for the return of the sun-child: the young star of light will soon reclaim its place in the heavens, to our great joy. The light will return, and in the brilliance of its return, the darkness of winter will gradually fade away, until the return of the Gods.

– Weles reigns over every season, but it is at this time that his power is most evident and his role takes on its full meaning. His greatness is celebrated. In families, his influence is essential and becomes synonymous with joy in the home.

– Several rituals must be performed during this time. The house must be thoroughly cleaned by opening doors and windows, placing coarse salt at each entrance, purifying the interior, hanging fir branches from the ceiling and decorating them, preparing the effigy of Marzanna which will remain until Jare Gody, and finally, adorning the solstice log with our deepest wishes. This last tradition is not exclusively reserved for Germanic and Scandinavian peoples; it is also found among some Slavic groups. Szczodre Gody is a time for reflection, introspection, and renewal.

-The ritual takes place partly within the family, to honor the memory of the Ancestors, and partly at the Dazbog sanctuary, high in the mountains, to best appreciate his return among us. Another ritual takes place at the beginning of January, at a historical site on Mount Cornet, to share our faith in Dazbog and his family, as well as in the Gods and Goddesses, all together. A long period of celebration then begins, as is customary and as was the tradition in ancient times. A large bonfire burns brightly to welcome and strengthen the return of our dear young and beautiful Sun. At the end of the burning, each person takes a piece of the remaining wood to accompany them until the next solstice, when it will be placed back on the fire and replaced with a new piece. This tradition brings good fortune and protection to everyone.

-Szczodre Gody is a truly magical and transformative time. It is experienced with family and within the clan, to honor the highly important deities of Slavic religion, as well as our ancestors.

Happy celebration to all!
